Tourism Minster Konrad Mizzi said he has directed Air Malta to pick up a group of 150 children and accompanying adults from Aalborg, Denmark due to problems encountered by a private charter operator.

The group, from the Pro Touch Football Academy, had travelled on a private charter to Denmark to compete in a youth football tournament. However, as they were due to return to Malta yesterday afternoon, they realised that their return flight couldn’t be operated due to technical problems.

Stranded in Denmark, the Maltese contingent contacted Air Malta and the Tourism Ministry for help and they certainly obliged.

Mizzi said he instructed the national airline to go through operational changes and operate a relief flight to Denmark despite the busy summer schedule.

The flight will be free of charge for the passengers but Air Malta will charge the private charter operator.

“This is clear proof that Air Malta continues to be a strategic asset for our country,” Mizzi said.

The flight is expected to depart Denmark to Malta later on tonight.
