World-famous actress Meryl Streep has paid tribute to assassinated Maltese journalist ahead of the premiere of her new film The Laundromat, a comedy based on the Panama Papers.

“The film is an entertaining, flash, fun way of telling a very, very dark joke that’s being played on all of us,” Streep said at the premiere of the film in Venice. “And many of the victims are journalists who get the word out.”

Singling out Caruana Galizia, Streep said: “People died and people die still to get the word out. This movie is fun and it’s funny but it’s really, really, really important.”

Caruana Galizia’s son Matthew was part of the team at the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which broke the Panama Papers story in April 2016.

However, Daphne Caruana Galizia had started writing about its findings, namely that Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi and the Prime Minister’s chief of staff Keith Schembri owned a Panama company, over a month before the story broke worldwide.

This is the third time Meryl Steep has paid tribute to the murdered journalist, once describing her as an example of true bravery and claiming she got killed for reporting on the Panama Papers.
