OPM, PL say Anton Refalo’s alleged assault case is a ‘private matter’

Both the government and the Labour Party have insisted that they should not go into the ‘private’ matters of Gozo MP Anton Refalo, who is expected to be charged in court for assaulting his son.

Refalo allegedly assaulted his son after being informed that the latter had been sending revenge porn images involving his former girlfriend. According to reports, Refalo was informed about the images by the woman’s father.

In comments to The Malta Independent, a spokesperson for the Office of the Prime Minister said: “Anton Refalo’s case is a private matter and his right to privacy in such a delicate matter should be respected.  The Police are acting according to the prevalent laws, but Dr Refalo has a right to defend his position.”

The Labour Party told this newsroom: “Partit Laburista believes that the right to privacy with regards to family matters should always be respected. I must note that we have always been consistent on this principle.”

Serving as Gozo Minister between 2013 and 2017, Refalo is one of parliament’s longest-serving MPs, having first been elected in 1987.

He was frozen out of cabinet in the 2017 general election despite having obtained the highest number of votes of any candidate in Gozo, and last year he was made chairman of Heritage Malta.
