The dearly departed Azure Window has been given a posthumous accolade by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who has approved the naming of a new street in San Lawrenz as ‘Triq it-Tieqa tad-Dwejra’ (Dwejra Window Street).
Below the street’s new name is the 28-metre-tall Azure Window’s date of death, 8 March 2017, when the late renowned geological attraction crumbled into the sea. In such instances, a date of birth is also usually provided on the street name but, in this case, that is a little difficult to determine. The window is believed to have been formed in the early to mid-19th century.
According to a notice published in the Government Gazette this week, the road, which was previously nameless, is that located between Triq id-Dwejra and Triq it-Torri in San Lawrenz.
The final collapse followed a century of natural erosion, during which large sections of the limestone arch had broken off and fallen into the sea.
