Investigators are currently cross-checking claims made by Keith Schembri and Yorgen Fenech, who are being questioned simultaneously at the police headquarters.
According to reports, Fenech has tried to pin the blame on Schembri, the Prime Minister’s former chief of staff. He has reportedly told investigators that Schembri is the mastermind behind the killing of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Yorgen Fenech was arrested on Wednesday last week. He has been granted police bail a number of times and was arrested for the first time on Wednesday. Schembri has been under arrest since Tuesday morning.
A source said the interrogation has reached a very delicate stage, with prosecutors cross checking the information being provided by both men.
Times of Malta reports that Schembri is now also being treated as a ‘person of interest’ in the case but investigators are apprehensive about the information being given to them by Fenech. The latter is requesting a presidential pardon.
Sources told The Malta Independent that investigators are as yet unable to verify some of Fenech’s claims and the process might take long. This could mean, the sources said, that any arraignment could be delayed.
