The Grupp Festa Sant’ Anna of Marsaskala has become the latest band club to ban plastic balloons from its village feast festivities and has used the occasion to pass on an appeal to the authorities.
“After talks with stakeholders, including the parish priest, the band club president, the mayor and vice mayor, it has been decided not to use and balloons in the village feast,” the band club said. “This initiative is being taken to alleviate a little bit of the marine pollution problem that has taken over our seas.”
“We also want to send a strong message to the authorities to do something about the harmful cigarette butts, one of the major causes of pollution in our seas. We urge the authorities to provide us with bins with the facility to discard these cigarette butts, which are causing more harm than the village feast balloons.”
The initiative to convince Maltese band clubs to stop using plastic balloons is being fronted by environmental activist Came Appelgren. Besides Marsaskala, band clubs in Qormi, Luqa, Siġġgiewi and Mġarr have already done away with them.
