German national carrier Lufthansa is set to start operating a flight between New York and Malta after an agreement was reached with an unnamed cruise company.

Various aviation websites reported yesterday that Lufthansa had updated its schedule to include a direct flight between Newark airport and Malta.

It is understood that the chartered flight will be operated up to three times a week between 30th June and 15th October.

The flights will be operated in conjunction with a large cruise company believed to be Viking Cruises. This means that tickets will only be available to passengers who will be boarding one of the Viking’s cruise ships.

In comments to the Times of Malta, a Lufthansa spokesperson said that the deal is still awaiting confirmation.

Viking Cruises will be operating two cruise liners out of Malta this summer, with each ship having an estimated capacity of roughly 900 passengers.

In recent years, cruise liner tourists have accounted for an ever-increasing proportion of Malta’s tourist arrivals with a record 765,696 cruise liner passengers stopping over on the island in 2019, the last year of tourism before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

The industry has been decimated by the pandemic with worldwide operations practically shut down during 2020.

With COVID-19 active cases dropping fast, Malta is now hoping to get the industry back up and running this summer season.
